A humanistic society is not one that renounces progress

The question of technology’s role is not a new one. We are all too quick to forget that, from the Renaissance to the Enlightenment, technological revolutions were accompanied by advances in knowledge and critical thinking. This virtuous cycle between progress and reason—between technological capital and human capital—must now guide our approach to artificial intelligence.

If the Enlightenment made it possible to harness technological progress for the sake of human emancipation, why shouldn’t the same be true of AI?

European history shows that technological progress is never an end in itself. It has always been guided by new rights. We must draw inspiration from this to build a humanistic form of artificial intelligence. Scientific advances have had their most fruitful impact when they have been accompanied by the dissemination of knowledge and the development of critical thinking.
